Family

Story

A Family Struggles for a Home…
and for a Future

Nuzha and Ali have lost so much, but have so much more to live for

You have a choice. You can flee your home. You can leave your eldest child, still a teenager. You can keep running as the bombs fall. Or you can stay in a warzone. You can watch your neighbourhood, your city, your country turned to rubble. You can be there to offer comfort after your grandchild dies.

This is the life of Nuzha and Ali Alhamud. There are no good choices for those fleeing Syria. There are only degrees of suffering. They took seven of their eight children when they fled. They went from town to town in Syria, living in shelters, always knowing the grim reality facing their country, never feeling safe.

They are safer now, living in Jordan, but life is still a struggle. Ali is unable to work due to his poor health; regardless, work permits in Jordan are difficult to acquire. CARE has provided the family with emergency cash assistance to help cover expenses such as food, medicine and rent.

Still, they long for a home, their home. They long for the lives their children deserve. They wait for the life they deserve. They still hope to be able to return to that life in Syria.

The Show You Care project is bringing Canadians together in the face of the current refugee crisis to demonstrate the Canadian values of welcoming, acceptance and respect for human dignity.

There are more Nuzhas and Alis out there, and Canada will be helping 25,000 of them, providing haven for them and their hope. This is your chance to welcome people like Nuzha and Ali, to gather them close and let them know they’re home.
